VAR official Matt Donohue and assistant VAR Blake Antrobus have not been appointed to any Premier League matches for the upcoming weekend. The decision follows an admission by Pro Ref of an error of judgement regarding the winning goal scored by Erling Haaland during the Manchester derby.
The goal was initially disallowed for offside on the field but was awarded after a VAR review determined that Patrick Dorgu’s boot played Haaland onside. Pro Ref stated that the VAR team should have recommended an on-field review to examine the position of Enzo Fernandez, who was in an offside position when he dived at the ball.
Manchester City secured the win in that match, maintaining a 100% league record after four games. This result occurred despite the team playing with ten men for the majority of the match following a 23rd-minute red card for Phil Foden.
