The London City Lionesses fielded a starting XI without any English players during the opening night of the 2025-26 Women's Super League season. This event highlights a broader trend in the competition, where the proportion of homegrown players, defined as those from England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, starting at least half of their league matches has fallen to under one-third over the last three seasons.

This decline contrasts with other major European leagues. During the 2025-26 season, the percentage of players starting half or more of their matches who were homegrown reached 61% in France's Premiere Ligue, 63% in Germany's Frauen Bundesliga, and 69% in Spain's Liga F.

Currently, FA regulations mandate that WSL clubs include eight homegrown players within their squad lists. To address concerns regarding talent development pathways, the FA has approved a plan for selected WSL academy sides to compete in the National League beginning in the 2027-28 season.
